My Reflection
Overall, I really enjoyed doing this content knowledge project. Although it was challenging, I learned a lot of information on my topic that I had never known. I also learned a lot about myself. I learned that I can research a topic and demonstrate that I know and understand the information I found. I had never done any type of research like this before, so I was surprised by how well I did. I also learned a lot about the Greensboro sit-ins that I had never known. I did not know until I researched this topic of the struggles that the African American people went through before desegregation. I also did not know that the "Greensboro Four" had many white supporters. I automatically assumed that all white people were against desegregation and the sit-ins. This really opened my eyes to a new perspective that I had never known before.
I faced some tough challenges while doing this project. Writing the overall paper was somewhat challenging. I found it difficult to take in so much information and try and organize it all in the paper. Putting the information into a website format was also challenging. I had a hard time learning how to add pictures and text in a way that looked good. In the end, I ended up with a project that I am very proud of.
This topic would be great to teach with elementary students. It is important for them to know their countries history, because it is what has shaped American into the country it is today. I am from Greensboro, North Carolina, so that is what led me to pick this topic. In school I had heard about this topic, but we never went into much detail. This was such an important part of Greensboro's history that it is something that should have been taught more. I think it is also good for students to see how normal people like themselves can make a difference in the world. The famous "Greensboro Four" stood up for what they believed in, and it changed the world we live in today. This is so powerful and important for students to know. Here are some standards that could be used for this topic:
6.H.1.3 Use primary and secondary sources to interpret various historical perspectives.
6.H.2.2 Compare historical and contemporary events and issues to understand continuity and change.
4.H.1.3 Explain how people, events and developments brought about changes to communities in various regions of N.C.
4.H.2.1 Explain why important buildings, statues, monuments, and place names are associated with the state's history.
Overall, I enjoyed doing this project. It has helped me understand that social studies topics can be interesting and meaningful. I know now that I can research a topic and present it to my students in a way that is interesting and beneficial to them. Although this project was difficult at times, it was also very beneficial to me as a future educator. I hope that people will read this digital museum and understand more about the Greensboro sit-ins.
